The best time of year to fish for tuna out of Hout Bay is during the Autumn Run (mid-March to June) and the Spring/Summer Run (October to December). Local experts rank April and May as the peak months for the largest Yellowfin catches due to calm sea conditions. The late-year spring run also yields great numbers, but can be frequently disrupted by strong summer winds. Hout Bay deep-sea charters halt all tuna operations from July to September due to harsh winter winter storms.
